Heartland Queens FC proved bookmakers wrong by earning a decent barren draw at Nigerian champions and Africa’s bronze winners, Bayelsa Queens in NWFL Premiership matchday 3 clash on Wednesday at the Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa Bayelsa State.
First competitive match between both sides even though the Prosperity Girls had the edge going into the matchup having beaten the Owerri side in a preseason test match in Yenagoa.
Bayelsa Queens came into the matchup rested and well oiled after being drawn bye the previous week to notch up the full points while the Owerri side still had their noses bruised no thanks to the 0-2 loss to Delta Queens penultimate Wednesday in Owerri.
However, the Owerri landladies turned the screws at the right time to deny their illustrious opponents any form of victory dance.
Bayelsa Queens had their penalty saved by Nigeria’s U17 invitee and safest hand, Uchechi Onyechere in the first half and despite the fact that the Owerri side had their penalty appeals waved aside they stayed resolute till the end.
The story would have been sweetest for the Owerri side if the side’s all-time leading scorer, Lucky Mary and forward, Chinedu Chinaka had made counted few glaring chances that came on their way.
Former Nigerian junior international, Oluchi Ofoegbu made her inclusion in the game counts in favour of her side same as goalkeeper fantastic, Uchechi Onyechere.
Long thrower and strong woman, Victoria Bassey was at her very best to keep the homers at bay with her characteristics and trademark.
Midfielder, Favour Dagogo smelled red after two bookable offences.
The hard fought and well deserved goalless draw ensured that Heartland Queens did not head into the Yuletide and New Year break pointless.
Heartland Queens are on bye for matchday 4 and will resume match actions in the New Year against multiple champions, Rivers Angels.
