NWFL 2021/22 : Suliat Abideen’s Two Goals Silenced Confluence Queens In Benin

Resilient Edo Queens Football Club of Benin on Wednesday evening at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium Benin City continued their unbeaten run in the NWFL Matchday 11 premiership game as two first half fantastic goals from midfield dynamo Suliat Abideen, were all Edo Queens FC needed to prove their supremacy over the visiting Ladies from Lokoja as they recorded an astounding 2-0 victory Confluence Queens FC in their 10th match of the 2021/2022 NWFL premiership season.

Edo Queens took the game to their opponents from the blast of the whistle as they dictate play from the midfield down to the area of their opponents with well knitted passes and promising attacks.

The side’s effort paid off in the 24th minute when the midfield marshal, Suliat Abideen, opened the floodgate; a poor clearance from a Confluence Queens defender from an Edo Queens attack gave Abideen the ball at the edge of the box and her quick one-two with the birthday girl, Chioma Olise fell in a good place for her to send in a volley into the back of Confluence Queens net and she breezed away in celebration.

Edo Queens kept on pushing forward seeking more goals as they pinned Confluence Queens under pressure with unrelenting attacking efforts, but the Alexander led backline was never going to give in for the home side. Confluence Queens had few fine moves upfront after the half hour mark, but Akudo Ogbonna and Odiri Ugberu stood firm to ward off any opportunity for the girls in blue.

With four minutes left to play in the first half, Edo Queens earned a corner kick on the far right side of their attack. Onyebuchi Goodness flung into the box the kick and Confluence Queens goalkeeper punched out to the feet of Abideen who sent home a more terrific volley from outside the box and straight to the top right corner of the net to send the home supporters into another jubilation.

The second half saw lots of chances fluffed by the home side, but they held on to their first half lead to lay claim on their seventh win and fifth in a row which sees them sitting comfortably at the top of Group A with 23 points.

Excited assistant coach of the Godwin Obaseki ladies John Niyi, said:
“We worked hard for this victory, so I’m not surprised that my players did very well.”

“With God on our side we don’t want to lose any match and I believe that if we go to Nassarawa we won’t come back empty-handed. We can maintain the pressure because It’s all about determination and effort, we have a very balanced defence line and we have different approaches to playing Home and Away games. So. I want to give kudos to the girls for doing us proud”.

Confluence Queens Coach, Liadi Bashiru, “It was a bad day for us, it was not what we were expecting in the match but we need to look at what has to be done to put the team back to winning ways. If I have to give the man of the match award I would give it to her and I was impressed by her performance. With this defeat, we have to go back and work hard in our remaining games.”

Edo Queens’ next game will be against Nasarawa Amazon FC in Lafia. Currently, they are top of group A with 23 points with 7 wins and 2 Draws, from 9 games. Edo Queens is the only NWFL premiership club side that is yet to lose a match this season.
