The National Sports Commission (NSC) has reaffirmed its commitment to aggressive sports infrastructural development, emphasizing the role of core professionals in the construction sector.
This position was highlighted by NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, while hosting a delegation from the Nigerian Institute for Quantity Surveyors (NIQS), led by its President, QS Kene Ezekwe FNIQS, on a working visit.
Mallam Dikko underscored the fundamental role of infrastructure in sports development at both elite and grassroots levels.
“You cannot develop sports without infrastructure. Whether at the elite or amateur level, infrastructure is needed. Without infrastructure, there will be no development. We have to facilitate the development of sports with proper maintenance and getting value for money,” he stated.
With over three decades of experience as a Fellow of the NIQS, the NSC Chairman stressed that sports infrastructure will take center stage in the Commission’s 2025 budget.
“For 2025, infrastructure is top on our list. It is 80% of the budget because we believe that it is the foundation for sports. We will definitely need the services of professionals in this regard. As a Fellow of the NIQS, I know the importance of this collaboration with NIQS because we cannot compromise global standards in developing our sporting infrastructure,” he added.
QS Ezekwe, in his remarks, urged the NSC to integrate Quantity Surveyors into its sports projects to ensure financial prudence, cost planning, and adherence to international standards.
“Sports infrastructure is a critical component of any thriving sporting ecosystem. The design, construction, and maintenance of sports facilities require careful cost planning, financial prudence, and adherence to international standards. This is where the expertise of Quantity Surveyors becomes indispensable,” he noted.
The NIQS delegation also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Mallam Dikko as NSC Chairman, describing the decision as a perfect fit for the sector’s revitalization.
“This is a round peg in a round hole. This is one appointment that everyone in the sector is applauding. With your diligence over the years, not just in sports but also as a professional Quantity Surveyor, there is no doubt you possess what it takes to fix the sector. This is the type of appointment that renews hope, and we thank President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for making this possible,” the delegation stated.
With infrastructure now a priority, the NSC aims to create world-class sports facilities to drive the country’s sporting development and global competitiveness.
