In line with its commitment to supporting sports federations, the National Sports Commission (NSC) has reiterated its resolve to back the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in their quest for FIFA World Cup qualification.
This assurance was made by NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, during the official unveiling ceremony of the new Super Eagles head coach, Eric Sekou Chelle.
Speaking at the event, Mallam Dikko emphasized the synergy between the NSC and NFF, stating: “If the NFF succeeds, we (NSC) succeed. If the NFF fails, we fail. So we will do all we can to support them to succeed.
This is what I have been telling all the other Sports Federations and I am telling NFF the same thing now. Our destinies are sort of tied together.”
Presidential Support Group to Aid NFF
As part of efforts to ensure success, the NSC has proposed the establishment of a Presidential Support Group (PSG) to complement the NFF’s efforts. Mallam Dikko clarified the role of the PSG, stating, “The Presidential Support Group is not taking over the work of the NFF. NFF will do their work; PSG will only support the NFF to achieve the same goal. That is why we are not calling it a task force but a support group.”
Thorough Selection Process for Chelle
Mallam Dikko also lauded the rigorous process that led to the selection of Chelle as the 37th Super Eagles head coach. “The process to select Eric was thorough. At the NSC, we followed all the processes and details, and we are happy with the outcome. I must congratulate Eric for being part of this great opportunity to contribute to Nigeria’s football journey.”
Strengthening ECOWAS Bonds
He highlighted the significance of Chelle’s appointment in strengthening regional ties within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), given Nigeria’s leadership in the bloc. “Having a Franco-Malian here is another opportunity for bonding in ECOWAS and expanding our influence as leaders in the region and beyond. This aligns with the vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who chairs ECOWAS.”
Chelle’s Credentials and Immediate Task
Mallam Dikko underscored Chelle’s impressive track record with Mali, where he led the national team in 22 games, securing 14 wins, five draws, and only three losses, with over 40 goals scored and just 13 conceded. “We need someone who understands African football. Eric comes highly motivated, recommended, and qualified. His record with Mali is impeccable, and his familiarity with the African terrain is crucial as we head straight into qualifiers.”
He added that Chelle’s determination to lead the Super Eagles was evident in his decision to take a significant pay cut to assume the role, a testament to his commitment to the team’s success.
Call for Support
The NSC Chairman called on stakeholders and fans to rally behind the new coach and the Super Eagles. “I urge all stakeholders to stop the negativity and support Eric. We are all committed to seeing the Super Eagles succeed.”
NFF President and Chelle’s Vision
NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau emphasized that Chelle’s appointment was aimed at ensuring a smoother path in the remaining World Cup qualifiers. For his part, Eric Sekou Chelle expressed his determination to harness the attacking potential of the Super Eagles and deliver on expectations.
With the combined efforts of the NSC, NFF, and the newly appointed coach, Nigeria’s journey to World Cup qualification is set to gain renewed momentum.
