The team climbed out of the relegation zone on Thursday, extending their unbeaten streak to five matches with a commanding 2-0 victory over Niger Tornadoes in an NPFL matchday 31 fixture at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Boboye stressed that his team still has significant work ahead in the remaining seven matches to secure their NPFL status for next season.
“We are not done yet. This result has taken us out of the drop zone, but we still have seven matches left before the season ends,” he said.
“Our goal is to secure maximum points in each of these games. We must fight for every available point, both home and away, because that’s the only way we can achieve our objective.”
Boboye praised his players for their determination and commitment, noting that their recent performances have lifted them out of the relegation zone for the first time this season. He urged them to maintain the same level of focus in the remaining matches.
“I want to commend my players for their effort. They played with great determination, and you can see their confidence growing. We need to sustain this momentum in all our upcoming games.”
In Thursday’s match, Akwa United took the lead in the 44th minute when Ifeanyi Oloye inadvertently headed Etiene Asuquo’s long throw-in into his own net. Substitute striker Abson Mare sealed the victory in the second half with a precise finish, securing all three points for the 2021 league champions.
With this win, the Promise Keepers moved up to 16th place on the NPFL table with 37 points from 31 matches.
Their unbeaten run now stands at four wins and one draw in their last five games, during which they have scored eight goals while conceding just once.
Akwa United will travel to Lafia next weekend for a crucial match against fellow relegation battlers, Nasarawa United, on matchday 32. The outcome of this fixture could prove vital in determining the survival hopes of both teams
