Kwara United missed a chance to go third on the Nigeria Professional Football League(NPFL) table after a shambolic 4-0 defeat at the hands of bottom side Niger Tornadoes in the Matchday 35 fixture of the NPFL
Niger Tornadoes went ahead just two minutes into the encounter when Kwara United goalkeeper, Dele Aiyenugba tipped Shamsudeen Hashim’s ball into his own net to give the hosts a one goal advantage.
Fifteen minutes later, Jonas Emmanuel doubled the lead for Tornadoes with a beautiful goal as the ball beat Dele Aiyenugba.
The hosts made several efforts afterward to extend their lead but were not clinical in converting those chances as the ‘Ikon Allah’ ended the first half with a 2-0 lead.
Shamsudeen Hashim headed the ball into the net in the 51th minute to score Niger Tornadoes third goal in the game before getting his brace and the hosts fourth goal just three minutes later to wrap up the victory for Tornadoes in the encounter.
After full-time, Niger Tornadoes walked away with an impressive 4-0 victory and the maximum three points at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna.
The defeat meant a setback for Kwara United in their fight for continental football next season. The Harmony Boys still sit 5th on the NPFL table with 52 points while Niger Tornadoes moved up to 13th position on the table with 43 points.
Meanwhile in Uyo, Akwa United bounced back from the last match shocking defeat to Dakkada F.C as the reigning NPFL champions scored a late winner to beat 2nd placed Plateau United 2-1 in their Matchday 34 encounter on Saturday evening.
David Onovo netted a brilliant goal in the 10th minute of the match to give Akwa United a 1-0 halftime lead before Akila Jesse finished a counter attacking play to equalize for Plateau United just five minutes into the second half.
The Promise Keepers searched for their second goal to return into the lead in the game for the next 40minutes before their efforts finally paid off in the 4th minute of the additional time when Leo Ezekiel scored the winning goal for Akwa United to hand a 2-1 victory at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium
Akwa United moved one place up to 7th on the NPFL table with 51 points while Plateau United remained 2nd on the table with 61 points.
The other eight concluding fixtures for the Matchday 35 of the NPFL will be played across different locations in the country on Sunday(tomorrow).
