Two own goals from Kunle Odunlami, Fabian Nworie, and another two from Ossy Martins and Samuel Mathias prevented Rivers United from completing their fifth game unbeaten on Sunday at the Aper Aku Stadium in Makurdi.
Having triumphed 2-0 against MFM FC on Wednesday, Stanley Eguma’s side were looking to complete an unprecedented five games unbeaten on this ground. However, they fell behind after only two minutes when Kunle Odunlami diverted Ebube Duru’s free-kick into his own net. Ossy Martins added to the tally in the 48th minute when he fired past Abiodun Akande from close range.
Samuel Mathias compounded the situation for the “Pride of Rivers as he benefitted from a Douglas Achiv’s rebound to make it 3-0 for the Ortom boys who were on the cruise.
Fortune Omoniwari reduced the deficit for Rivers United after Nelson Esor had robbed Mutiu Ogundimi of the ball after 79th minute to set him up for his fifth goal of the season.
For a while, Rivers United played like they believed a comeback was possible and the hushed nature of the fans in the stadium smacked off a certain nervousness. However, ‘The bad day at the office” for the ‘Pride of Rivers’ was capped with another own goal as Fabian Nworie nodded past his own keeper from Mutiu Ogundimi’s lob in the 82nd minute of the match.
