In the aftermath of the disrupted Oriental Derby between Rangers International and Enyimba FC on Sunday, the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) has handed down significant penalties to both clubs.
The match, abandoned in the 99th minute after a controversial penalty decision, has led to severe repercussions for the involved parties.

Penalties Imposed
1. Enyimba FC:
– Enyimba FC has been fined a total of N10 million for various infractions, including improper conduct by staff and players, disruption of the live broadcast, fan encroachment, throwing objects, and failing to adhere to fair play principles by not completing the match.
– The club forfeits 3 points and 3 goals, which have been awarded to Rangers International.
– Three Enyimba players—Akanni Elijah, Eze Ekwutoziam, and Chibuke Nwaiwu—are under investigation for their roles in the incident and are expected to face further sanctions.
2. Rangers International:
– Rangers have been fined N5 million for over-ticketing, inadequate security measures, ineffective crowd control, and allowing unauthorized persons into restricted areas.
– As a result of Enyimba’s forfeiture, Rangers has been awarded 3 points and 3 goals.
– Both clubs have the option to appeal these decisions within 48 hours.
The match, which saw over 30,000 fans in attendance and generated over N10 million in ticket sales, ended in chaos after the referee awarded a late penalty to Rangers.
Enyimba players protested vehemently, leading to a pitch invasion by fans and subsequent abandonment of the game.
The NPFL’s sanctions aim to address the breaches of conduct and ensure such disruptions do not recur, emphasizing the need for better security and adherence to league regulations.
