Nasarawa United’s quest to return to the top of the Nigeria Professional Football League summit suffered a setback at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, on Monday evening.
Two quick first-half goals from God’spower Aniefiok(2′) and Esor Archibong(8′) saw the Solid Miners trailing the Flying Antelopes.
United would have reduced the deficit before the interval, but Aliyu Abdullahi couldn’t convert the golden chance that came his way inside the area.
Upon resumption, United tried to pick up their pieces, Abdullahi Abubakar sent in an inswinger but the hosts’ defence would clear it into a corner.
In the 54th minute, the travellers thought they had reduced the deficit through Chinedu Ohanachom after he hit the ball last during a goalmouth squabble, only for the flag to go up for an offside.
Moments later, Ohanachom got clipped down inside the box but his call for a penalty was waved away by the referee.
The duo of substitutes, David Ehiaghe, Dauda Maigishiri, and Silas Nwankwo, all came closest to scoring for United toward the closing periods of the game but to no avail.
2-0 it ended as in favour of Rangers who have moved to 2nd position on the league log with 30 points, as United slip down to 6th position with 27 points from seventeen games.
The Solid Miners next play Abia Warriors at the Lafia City Stadium on Sunday, 28th March, 2021.
POST-MATCH REACTIONS:
Coach Bala Nikyu(NAS): “We take the outcome of the game in good faith.
“Those goals came in as a result of some carelessness at our end, but there has to be a mistake for there to be a goal.
“However, after the break, we pressed on to get something out of the game, but it wasn’t to be, and we move on from here.
“Abia Warriors are our next opponents, and will try our best to get the desired result at home.”
Coach Mbwas Mangut(RAN): “We got our goals earlier before Nasarawa United got stabilized, and we thank God for that.”
