NPFL 2020/21: Wikki Shines As Rivers United Suffer First Defeat Of The Season

By Samuel Bamisebi

Matchday’s four actions brought a lot of mixed results including Heartland picking up their first win of the season against Enyimba, Jigawa Golden stars picking up their first away win of the NPFL since 2008 as well as Wikki Tourist ending Rivers United winning streak in Bauchi.

Wikki Tourist defeated Stanley Eguma’s boys courtesy a line goal scored by Chinedu Udeagha in the 30th minute of the game, condemning Rivers United to their first league defeat of the 2020/21 season after winning their first three games of the season.

Speaking to Sports247 after the game, Technical Adviser of Rivers United, Stanley Eguma said fatigue contributed to the team’s loss in Bauchi. “After our game on Sunday, we had a hectic period traveling to Bauchi. Fatigue was instrumental to our today but the players tried their best. We have lost today but we still have other games to play. We will work on our mistakes and also the fatigue issue,” said Rivers United coach, Stanley Eguma.

Head coach of the winning Wikki Tourist team, Usman Abdallah also shared his thoughts after the game. “We won the game in the first half. I was expecting a lot of goals, maybe two or three but unfortunately, we missed some chances and we did not get enough of the ball in their 18-yard box. We improved in the second half but still missed chances. We got the first goal and bagged the three points and we’re happy with it,” said an excited Wikki Tourist coach, Usman Abdallah.

Wikki Tourist are currently 16th on the NPFL table with 4 points from 4 games and they next travel to Uyo to face 12th place Akwa United above them with just a point while Rivers United remain top of the table with 9pts from 4 games and next face 18th placed Heartland FC with 3pts from 4 games.

The next round of fixtures hold this weekend, 17th of January, 2021 and that will be matchday five of the NPFL 2020/21 season.
