The NPFL matchday six final fixture saw the Sai Masu Gida boys, Kano Pillars defeat Rivers United 1-0 at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna.
Fresh from their 3-0 thrashing of South Africa’s Bloemfontein Celtic (5-0 agg) in Port Novo, Rivers United came into this game second on the table and hoping to run out with a result against Kano Pillars who were looking for stability.
Kano Pillars took the lead in the 19th minute courtesy of a goal from Nyima Nwagua who reacted fast to a spill of the ball from veteran goalkeeper Theophilus Afelokhai and they finished the half in front.
Kano Pillars however were reduced to 10 men in the 51st minute after Abbas Rabiu received the marching orders following a second bookable offense which lead to Rivers United throwing more men forward to try to level the game.
Time eventually ran out and Kano Pillars move up to 5th on the log with that win as Rivers remain 2nd on the table. The goal was Nwagua’s second of the season.
Rivers United play host to struggling Adamawa United in the next game while Kano Pillars make the trip to Uyo to face Kennedy Boboye’s boys, Akwa United in matchday seven in the Nigerian Professional Football League.
