The second half of the NPFL 2019/2020 season began with lots of goals with the week 20 witnessing at least a goal in every match centre including the rescheduled Abia Warriors and Enyimba match.
Heartland of Owerri were the biggest scorers of the weekend as they thrashed Adamawa United 5 nil on the green grass of Okigwe Township Stadium. Chukwuemeka Obioma netted a hat trick for the host, his fifth for the season while Abiodun Thompson and Eric Dufegha were also on the score sheet; the goal totals Thompson’s goal tally to 4 for the season.
While Adamawa United got thrashed, it was surprise result as Lobi Stars fell to an unexpected 4 nil defeat at the hands of Wikki Tourist. Idris Guda Mohammed netted twice taking his number of goals to six for the season with Manu Garba scored the other two on the night.
Samuel Kalu scored his third of the season as FC Ifeanyi Ubah beat Sunshine stars by 3-1 in Nnewi while Tosin Omoyele netted his second for the season in Plateau United’s 2-0 win over Dakkada FC.
In Enugu, it was the boys in form that fired from all cylinders; Akarandut Orok and Ndifreke Effiong gave Akwa United a massive three points away from home at the Cathedral. The former equalized while the latter scored the match winner for the promise keepers.
Ndifreke Effiong has now scored 9 goals in the current season and 52 goals in his NPFL career so far. The goal also puts him on top of the 2019/2020 NPFL goal scorers’ chart.
The rescheduled game between Abia Warriors and Enyimba FC saw 5 goals with Victor Mbaoma scoring his eighth for the season and Stanley Dimgba netting his third of the season for the Elephants of Aba after netting twice in the game.
Meanwhile for the first time since 2014, captain of Nigeria’s beach soccer team, Abu Azeez netted twice for his side, Warri wolves in their 2-0 victory over Katsina United.
