Nasarawa United of Lafia defender, Abubakar Aliyu Yerima has dedicated the club’s Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) promotion ticket to his ailing mum, who is down with stroke.
Abubakar disclosed this on Monday, few minutes after helping his side eke out a 2-1 victory over Sporting Supreme FC of Abuja in their last group match of the Nigeria National League (NNL) Super-8.
The match at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu took Nasarawa United to an unassailable nine points atop the Super-8 northern group and within two matches of getting crowned overall NNL champions.
Consequently, Abubakar added that his team’s next target is to be crowned champions of the lower division, in order to gain depths of confidence for next season’s campaign in the top-flight NPFL.
The enterprising right-back conceded that the players will need all levels of confidence, luck and encouragement they can get in order to excel in the NPFL, considering how tough they found Wednesday’s match against Sporting Supreme.
Abubakar added: “The match was too hard for us when we started, but we recovered and scored the two goals.
“I appreciate the way we played, and I am also happy with the goal we scored in the first half. Otherwise, the match would have been tougher for us.
“I dedicate the ticket to my mum because she is not feeling fine. She had a stroke, but she keeps praying for me; though she is not well.”
He went on to reveal the depth of his delight in being part of the squad that has taken The Solid Miners back to the NPFL, especially as this is his first season with the Lafia-based side.
“Last season, I was not with them. This is my first season with the club, and I’m very happy being one of the players that joined the team and helped them gain promotion to the premier league. I think this is awesome.
“Our next target is to win the cup. That will help us to go home with a lot of luck and encouragement,” Abubakar submitted.
