The delegation, made up of six top-tier athletes and two coaches, is determined to defend the country’s continental dominance following a stellar performance at the 2024 edition in Egypt, where Nigeria secured six gold and five silver medals.
Ahead of their departure, the National Sports Commission (NSC) reiterated its commitment to developing sports where Nigeria has a competitive edge, with a special focus on weightlifting.
“Weightlifting is a sport where Nigeria has consistently excelled—whether at the African level, the Commonwealth Games, the Olympic Games, or the Paralympics,” said NSC Director-General Hon. Bukola Olopade. “Our athletes have not only won medals but also set world records, and we’re confident they will make the nation proud once again.”
The Mauritius championship also plays a key role in the global ranking system by the International Weightlifting Federation and serves as a vital step in Nigeria’s buildup to future international competitions.
