Nigeria’s weightlifters at the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympic Games are set to begin their pursuit of medals on Thursday, August 8th, 2024, as Rafiatu Lawal steps into the spotlight in the Women’s 59 kg weight class at the South Paris Arena inside the Paris Expo Complex.
Rafiatu earned her place to represent Nigeria in Paris after accumulating the necessary points in various championships.

As she marks her Olympic debut, she carries the hopes and aspirations of Nigerians eager for a strong performance.
The 27-year-old Lawal, a two-time African Champion and Commonwealth Games champion, will compete against 10 other weightlifters from around the globe.
Notable competitors include reigning Olympic champion Chun Hsing Kuo of Chinese Taipei, world record holder Shifang Luo of China, and 2021 Olympic Gold medallist Charron Maude of Canada.
Lawal expressed her readiness and determination to NWF Media, emphasizing her preparation and high spirits for the competition.
The Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF) President, Dr. Ibrahim Abdul, encouraged Lawal to channel the Nigerian “I can do” spirit and to recall her effective techniques as she strives for a medal.
