The Nigerian Under 18 Women’s Handball team has arrived in Lagos to conclude their preparations for the IHF Women’s Under 18 World Cup in China.
After an intensive training phase in Benin City, Edo State, the team, led by Coach Shittu Adewunmi Agboola, is set for their final camp at Rowe Park Sports Center in Lagos.
The team’s initial training camp in Benin City involved 18 players and focused on rigorous preparatory sessions.
Coach Shittu praised the rewarding experience for both players and the technical crew, acknowledging the support from the Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN), led by Mr. Samuel Ocheho.
“The first phase of training in Benin City was rewarding for both the players and the technical crew.
We thank the Samuel Ocheho-led Handball Federation of Nigeria for ensuring we get the best preparation ahead of the world championship,” Coach Shittu said.
He emphasized that the Lagos camp aims to fine-tune its strategies before heading to China.
Nigeria is one of four African nations to qualify for the world championship, having earned their spot at the Africa Women’s Under 18 Handball Nations Cup in Monastir, Tunisia, last year.
The team also impressed in the IHF Trophy series, finishing second globally, and is considered one of the most exciting teams in the upcoming championship.
The U18 team will compete in Group B against European giants Croatia, Montenegro, and Angola at the Olympic Sports Center in Chuzhou, China.
The championship runs from August 14 to 25, 2024, with Nigeria’s first match scheduled for August 18.
As the team prepares to make history at the IHF Women’s Under 18 World Cup, the final days of training in Lagos will be crucial in solidifying their game plan and boosting their confidence for the international stage.
