Nigeria’s U-18 Women’s Handball team emerged victorious at the IHF Women’s Trophy Africa Zone 3 tournament in the Youth category, defeating hosts Côte d’Ivoire 37-30 in an intense final on Thursday in Abidjan.

Coached by John Uzor, the Nigerian side displayed exceptional form throughout the competition and capped their campaign with a dominant performance marked by tactical discipline, high energy, and attacking flair.
The final lived up to its billing, featuring two unbeaten teams. Nigeria made an immediate impact, launching into an early lead with quick offensive plays and aggressive defense. Despite spirited support from the home crowd, Côte d’Ivoire struggled to break through Nigeria’s resilient backline, led by captain Omole Joy.
Nigeria continued to press with effective transitions, with Balikisu Amina setting the tone in attack. Although the Ivorians fought back, the Nigerian girls kept their composure and expertly managed the final minutes to secure a commanding seven-goal win.
Coach Uzor commended his players for their teamwork and dedication, stating, “This victory is a testament to the girls’ hard work. They played as one unit, supported each other, and truly embodied the spirit of champions.”
He also appreciated the support of the Handball Federation of Nigeria, led by Samuel Ocheho, for their efforts in preparing the team.
With this triumph, the U-18 team not only claimed the Zone 3 title but also booked a spot in the IHF Women’s Trophy continental phase, with the host venue to be announced.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s U-20 Women’s team claimed the bronze medal in the Junior category, bouncing back with a 31-19 win over Benin Republic after a narrow 28-25 semi-final loss to Burkina Faso.
The team, coached by Shittu Adewunmi Agboola, showed class in the third-place match, ending their campaign on a high note.
Burkina Faso, who edged Côte d’Ivoire 31-30 in the final, will represent Zone 3 in the Junior category of the continental phase of the IHF Women’s Trophy.
