A total of 205 talented young volleyball players from various regions of Nigeria have
gathered at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium (ABS) in Kaduna for an open trial, competing for a
chance to be selected for the national U-17 team.
The Technical Director of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF), Mr. Martins Melandi,
spoke about the purpose of the camp, stating that it was an U-17 Boys and Girls Open
Camp aimed at showcasing the players’ talents. He emphasized that the coaches present
would be selecting potential players for national team consideration.
Mr. Melandi mentioned that Nigeria had been granted the hosting rights for the U-17
competition by the CAVB (Confederation of African Volleyball). Originally scheduled for June, the event has been rescheduled for September. As a result, the NVBF is scouting for new players who can represent the country effectively.
“As of yesterday, we had 145 boys and 60 girls. We have already conducted a screening
process to eliminate overage players and those who don’t meet the height requirements.
Now we are conducting a second screening to evaluate their playing abilities,” he explained.
The NVBF Technical Director expressed satisfaction with the level of skill demonstrated by
some of the players, which has prompted the need to assess all participants thoroughly. “We want to ensure we select the best players by observing everyone on the court,” he added.
Following the three-day camp, the NVBF plans to choose 25 boys and 25 girls who will be
called up to subsequent training camps. Mr. Melandi also mentioned that the players have
come from all corners of Nigeria and are being provided with accommodation and meals by the federation. Additionally, they will receive transportation allowances when they return home.
In summary, the NVBF is conducting an U-17 Boys and Girls Open Camp in Kaduna, where 205 young volleyball players are competing for the opportunity to represent Nigeria in the U-17 competition. The federation is focused on selecting skilled players to make the nation proud, and after the camp, 25 boys and 25 girls will be chosen for further training.
The players are being supported with accommodation, meals, and transportation allowances by the NVBF.
