Nigeria’s Super Eagles Slide Eight Places in Latest FIFA World Rankings

In the latest monthly FIFA World Rankings released on Thursday, Nigeria’s Super Eagles have dropped significantly, falling from 30th to 38th in the global standings. This marks a sharp decline for the three-time African champions, who also slipped two places in the previous month’s rankings.

The drop in rankings follows a series of underwhelming performances in their recent 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The Super Eagles managed a 1-1 draw against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in Uyo but faltered in their next match, suffering a 2-1 defeat to the Cheetahs of Benin Republic. These results have cast a shadow over Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying campaign, sparking concerns about their form and future prospects.

Despite the slip in the global rankings, the Super Eagles remain among Africa’s elite, holding the fifth position on the continent.

Morocco continues to lead the African rankings, followed by Senegal in second place. Egypt and Côte d’Ivoire are positioned third and fourth, respectively, just ahead of Nigeria.

Morocco’s dominance in African football is reflected in their 12th place in the world, highlighting the competitiveness at the top of the African standings. Senegal is ranked 18th globally, while Egypt and Côte d’Ivoire hold the 36th and 37th spots, respectively.

As the Super Eagles look ahead, they face the challenge of regaining their momentum and improving their standings both in Africa and globally. Their upcoming fixtures will be crucial in determining their path forward and restoring their status as one of Africa’s top footballing nations.
