The championship commenced on September 4, 2023, and will run until September 17, 2023.
Lawrence Iquaibom is highly regarded as one of Nigeria’s most experienced weightlifting technical officials, with a notable presence at various international wrestling engagements.
Having retired as a weightlifter, he previously held the position of Director in the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Youths and Sports.
Iquaibom has already arrived in Riyadh and actively participated in pre-championship activities alongside other selected technical officials. His appointment as an International Technical Official at the IWF World Championship underscores his expertise and contribution to the sport.
The IWF World Championship holds significant importance as it serves as a crucial qualification event for weightlifters aspiring to compete in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Weightlifters will compete to secure one of the ten quota spots available in each of the ten Olympic weight classes through the IWF Olympic Qualification Ranking (OQR). An additional quota place in each class will be allocated to a National Olympic Committee (NOC) representing a continent that is not already represented.
Host nation France is guaranteed four quota berths, two for men and two for women, with the potential to secure two more through the OQR. Furthermore, six additional spots, three for men and three for women, are designated as Universality places.
These are made available to NOCs that would otherwise have limited opportunities for representation at the Olympic Games. In total, there will be 120 quota spots allocated through these pathways.
Lawrence Iquaibom’s appointment as an International Technical Official at this prestigious event underscores his contribution to the sport of weightlifting and his role in the global weightlifting community.
