Nigeria’s D’Tigress Soar to 8th in FIBA Rankings After Stellar Olympic Performance

Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have climbed from 12th to 8th place in the latest FIBA power rankings, following their outstanding performances at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Before the Games, D’Tigress were the lowest-ranked team among the 12 nations competing. However, their impressive showings in the group stage have significantly boosted their standing.

Under the guidance of coach Rena Wakama, D’Tigress finished third in Group B, securing notable victories against Australia and Canada, despite a loss to France.

The team kicked off their Olympic campaign with a historic 75-62 win over Australia on July 29, marking their first Olympic win since Athens 2004. Although they faced a setback with a 75-54 loss to France in their second match, they rebounded strongly with a 79-70 victory over Canada in their final group-stage game.

D’Tigress’ rise in the rankings is a testament to their resilience and skill, reflecting their ability to compete with and overcome higher-ranked teams. Their performance has not only elevated their global standing but also inspired fans and athletes back home in Nigeria.

Next, D’Tigress will face a formidable challenge in the quarterfinals as they go up against the defending champions, the USA, who currently hold the top position in the FIBA rankings. This crucial match is set for Wednesday, August 7, and will be a significant test of D’Tigress’ capabilities and growth.

Coach Rena Wakama and her squad are poised to give their best against the USA, aiming to continue their remarkable journey at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Their advancement to the quarterfinals and subsequent rise in the rankings underscore their potential to become a powerhouse in women’s basketball.
