Taking charge of the Pittsburgh women’s soccer team, he guided them in a match against Drexel, their first home game of the 2023 season at the Ambrose Urbanic Field.
The Panthers, energized by the presence of Nigerian international Deborah Abiodun, exhibited an authoritative performance throughout the game, securing a convincing 4-1 triumph and maintaining an unblemished record for the season.
Pittsburgh wasted no time in asserting their dominance, with junior forward Sarah Schupansky finding the net in the eighth minute.
Just four minutes later, Samiah Phiri unleashed a powerful strike, doubling the Panthers’ lead in the 12th minute.
The relentless attack continued, and Schupansky netted her second goal in the 13th minute.
In the 48th minute, midfielder Abiodun played a pivotal role in Pitt’s fourth goal, which was scored by Amanda West.
While Drexel managed to salvage a consolation goal in the 55th minute, courtesy of Delaney Lappin, Pitt remained in firm control and thwarted serious opportunities for the visiting team.
Following the match, Coach Randy Waldrum lauded the performance of Super Falcons sensation Abiodun.
Making her debut for Pitt against Drexel, Abiodun played for 39 minutes off the bench and notched her first career assist on the fourth goal.
Coach Randy Waldrum expressed his enthusiasm for Abiodun’s potential this season, underscoring her capacity to add physicality and athleticism to the midfield.
“Her contribution fills a gap we’ve had in the midfield, providing some much-needed physicality,” Waldrum remarked about Abiodun. “She’s a player who can win the ball in midfield, isn’t afraid to tackle, and adds a dynamic athleticism to our team. She’s an exceptionally intelligent player.”
He further noted, “As people watch her play more, they will come to truly appreciate her skill set. Her performance today might not have fully revealed her capabilities, but her ability to navigate tight spaces and execute simple, precise maneuvers with the ball is truly impressive.”
Pittsburgh’s upcoming challenge awaits as they gear up to face MAC opponent Kent State on Thursday.
With Abiodun’s promising debut and Coach Waldrum’s expertise, the Panthers are poised to continue their successful season in style.
