Nigerian Wrestling Federation Urges Coaches, Officials to Stay Updated on Rules Ahead of Douye Diri Classics

As the 3rd Governor Douye Diri National Wrestling Classics commence, officials are urged to stay current with wrestling rules, Sports247 reports.

The call was made during a clinic and technical meeting in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, as the tournament’s final preparations got underway.

Technical Director of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Ohaike Darmian, emphasized the importance of continuous learning in the sport.

“This clinic is very important because sports policies are the rules and guidelines that govern the activities and operations of sports organizations and events.

They are essential for ensuring safety, fairness, quality, and accountability in the sports sector,” he stated.

He further stressed the importance of adapting to evolving standards: “Sports policies are not static and need to be regularly reviewed and updated to reflect the changing needs, expectations, and challenges of the sports environment.

If you do not follow the foregoing, global practices will leave you behind.”

Darmian’s message to coaches and officials was clear: complacency must be avoided, and there is always room for improvement.

“So we call on coaches and officials to always equip themselves to current rules and regulations,” he added.

In his remarks, the President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Honourable Daniel Igali, highlighted that wrestling rules are frequently updated by global governing bodies such as United World Wrestling.

Igali urged officials to consult UWW resources, including websites and official magazines, to keep themselves informed.

He advised coaches to pass updated rules to their athletes, reminding them that “athletes are what they are taught.”

The technical meeting was overseen by other key federation members, including Vice President Chris Amkpila and Secretary General Mohammed Maigidansanma, reinforcing the commitment to high standards in officiating and coaching.

On Tuesday, the Wrestling Federation will host its Annual General Meeting, followed by the first matches in Junior/Cadet Greco-Roman, women’s, and freestyle wrestling.

With renewed emphasis on adherence to updated rules, the event aims to showcase the best in Nigerian wrestling
