The Nigerian wrestling team continued their impressive run at the African Senior Wrestling Championships in Egypt, securing an additional five gold medals on day 2 of the competition.
Building on their success from day 1, Nigerian wrestlers showcased their skill and dominance on the mat, further solidifying their status as continental powerhouses in the sport.

The day kicked off with African Games three-time champion, Mercy Genesis, setting the tone for Team Nigeria with a commanding performance in the 50kg category.
Mercy displayed her prowess by defeating NTSA ASSOUGA of Cameroon to retain her African Championships title, adding another gold to Nigeria’s tally.
The winning streak continued as Adijat Idris secured gold in the 53kg category by defeating Aya Eid Gomaa SOLIMAN of Egypt in a closely contested final.
Not to be outdone, Mercy Bolafunoluwa Adekuoroye delivered a stellar performance in the 59kg category, outclassing Hana Ali Hamada Mohamed HUSSEIN of Egypt to claim the gold medal for Team Nigeria.
Ebipatei Mughenbofa continued Nigeria’s dominance on the mat by triumphing over Egyptian Mouda Badawi Hamed in the 65kg final, while Ebi BIOGOS emerged victorious in the 72kg category by defeating Aya ICHAOUI of Tunisia.
However, Nigerian wrestler Ashton Mutuwa faced tough competition in the 125kg men’s freestyle final, ultimately settling for silver after losing to Youssif Ibrahim HEMIDA of Egypt.
Despite the setback, Mutuwa’s performance showcased Nigeria’s resilience and determination on the wrestling stage.
In addition to the gold and silver medals, Harrison Onovwiomobohwo and Stephen Simon Izolo displayed commendable performances in their respective weight categories, securing bronze medals for Nigeria in the 86kg and 65kg divisions.
With their outstanding performances in the African Championships, the Nigerian wrestling contingent now shifts its focus to the upcoming Olympic qualifiers.
The team aims to secure multiple slots for the Paris 2024 Games, further cementing Nigeria’s position as a force to be reckoned with in the global wrestling arena.
