The third Betsy Obaseki Football Tournament (BOWFT) is poised to take place in Benin City, Edo State, featuring prominent teams from the Nigerian Women’s Football League (NWFL).

This event will see Lagos-based Robo FC, Edo Queens, Rivers Angels, and ten other teams competing for the substantial N60 million prize money.
Scheduled to unfold from October 23 to November 1, 2023, the tournament will be hosted at several venues, including the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, the University of Benin Sports Complex, Western Boys Mini-Stadium, and the Edo State College of Nursing and Health Sciences Mini-Stadium.
The local organizing committee (LOC) has revealed that the N60 million in total prize money will be distributed among various categories, including the overall winners, first runners-up, second runners-up, and other participating teams as consolation prizes.
Crusoe Osagie, Chairman of the Communication Sub-committee for the tournament, emphasized that the 2023 competition serves as a pre-season event, aimed at honing and preparing teams for the Nigeria women’s league.
It is also designed to raise awareness and generate public interest in eliminating gender-based violence in all forms, showcasing the efforts made by Governor Godwin Obaseki-led state government over the past seven years to combat gender-based violence.
Participating teams include Bayelsa Queens, Delta Queens, Naija Ratels, Nasarawa Amazons, Osun Babes, Confluence Queens, Fortress Ladies, Ekiti Babes, Remo Stars Ladies FC, and Heartland FC.
Osagie noted that preparations are in place for the tournament, recognized by FIFA as a platform promoting women’s football globally. The unveiling of the mascot and the draws for the tournament are set to occur prior to the kickoff on Monday.
Activities will commence as the 13 confirmed teams arrive in Benin City on Sunday, October 22, 2023.
The Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium will receive the teams, and a press conference will be held, followed by the unveiling of the mascot and the tournament draws on Friday, October 20, 2023.
The first matches are scheduled to kick off on Monday, starting at 5 p.m. at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium. The competition will culminate with the third-place and final matches on November 1, 2023.
Trophies and consolation prizes will be awarded to participating clubs during the closing ceremony.
