Nigerian Teen Fencer Wisdom Okanlawon Selected for Elite Training Camp, to Compete at 2025 World Championships in China

The International Fencing Federation (FIE) has selected Nigerian teenage fencer, Wisdom Okanlawon, as one of five athletes from 30 African nations to participate in a high-performance training camp and compete at the 2025 Cadet and Junior World Championships in Wuxi, China.

According to the FIE, the training camp, scheduled from April 1 to 12, is organized in partnership with Olympic Solidarity. The initiative aims to identify and support top African fencing talents by providing world-class training and competition exposure. The camp will bring together some of the most promising young fencers worldwide.

In a statement, the Nigerian Fencing Federation highlighted that Okanlawon’s selection reflects his outstanding achievements, exceptional skills, and commitment to the sport. His inclusion in this elite group not only recognizes his talent but also affirms his potential to represent Africa on the global stage. Under the guidance of top coaches, the 18-year-old will have the opportunity to refine his skills.

Following the camp, Okanlawon will compete in the World Championships from April 13 to 15, where he will go head-to-head with some of the best junior fencers worldwide.

“This opportunity is a major milestone, not just for Okanlawon but for Nigerian and African fencing as a whole. It underscores the increasing recognition of African athletes in international sports and provides a platform for him to showcase his talent on a global level. His journey serves as an inspiration to young athletes across the continent, proving that dedication and hard work can open doors to extraordinary opportunities,” the statement added.

Speaking on the development, the President of the Nigerian Fencing Federation, Adeyinka Samuel, reaffirmed the Federation’s commitment to securing more opportunities for athletes to enhance their skills.

He described Okanlawon as a homegrown talent who has distinguished himself in the sport and serves as a role model for other young fencers.

“I’m not surprised by Okanlawon’s selection because he has consistently demonstrated great potential since we took him under our wing. He is a strong leader among his peers, and this is exactly the kind of athlete we aim to nurture—one who is committed, hardworking, and ready for global opportunities.

“We are thrilled that he will train under top coaches and compete against the world’s best fencers,” Samuel added.
