The official draw for the table tennis competitions, scheduled for Wednesday, July 24, will determine the initial opponents for Nigeria’s Olajide Omotayo, Offiong Edem, and Fatimo Bello. The event kicks off on July 27 at South Paris Arena.

A total of 172 players, split equally between men’s and women’s categories, will compete across five medal events, including two per gender and a mixed event.

Olajide Omotayo, making his second Olympic appearance, will start his campaign from the Preliminary Rounds of the Men’s Singles. Similarly, Edem, participating in her fifth Olympic Games, and debutant Bello will begin their journeys in the Preliminary Rounds of their respective categories.

Quadri Aruna, one of the top 16 seeds, will commence his fifth Olympic campaign from the Round of 64, which begins on July 28. Aruna’s most notable Olympic achievement was at Rio 2016, where he made history by reaching the quarterfinals of the Men’s Singles, becoming the first African to achieve this feat. Egypt’s Omar Assar matched this achievement at Tokyo 2020, demonstrating the growing prowess of African players in international table tennis.

The competition will also feature other prominent African athletes, including Egypt’s Dina Meshref, Hana Goda, and Mohamed El-Beiali, Senegal’s Ibrahima Diaw, Cameroon’s Sarah Hanffou, Algeria’s Mehdi Bouloussa and Lyna Loghraibi, and Madagascar’s Fabio Rakotoarimanana. These players will also start their campaigns from the Preliminary Rounds on July 27.

In addition to the African competitors, the table tennis world will be closely watching the legendary Chinese player, Ma Long. At 35 years old, Ma Long is considered the undisputed king of table tennis, with an unparalleled record of five Olympic gold medals. His Olympic journey began in 2012 with a gold medal as part of China’s Men’s Team. His dominance continued at Rio 2016, where he won his first Men’s Singles gold, cementing his status as a top contender.

Ma Long’s historic achievement at Tokyo 2020, where he defended his Men’s Singles title and added another team gold to his collection, solidified his legacy as an Olympic legend. With three singles world titles and the record for the longest reign as the world number one, Ma Long is widely regarded as the greatest table tennis player in history. As he prepares for what could be his final Olympic appearance, Ma Long aims to add yet another team gold to his impressive résumé.

With their arrival in Paris, Nigeria’s table tennis stars, along with other top international competitors, are ready to showcase their skills and vie for Olympic glory. The stage is set for a thrilling competition, and the world eagerly awaits the action to unfold.
