The team placed second on the final medals table with 47 gold, 34 silver, and 40 bronze medals, which Majekodunmi applauded and declared that Nigerian sports is on the rise again.
Majekodunmi, who is also the chairman of Ogun State Football Association, said he was impressed with the contingent’s performance in Ghana, which made him rain praises on the athletes, coaches and officials for making the country proud.
While admitting he was in Ghana for the under-20 women’s national team, Falconets, Majekodunmi asserted that his focus was not on only one sport, as everyone had to support the entire contingent.
He, however, admitted that losing to Ghana in the female football final was painful, even as he insinuated that it may have been because the Falconets were concentrating on the forthcoming FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
Majekodunmi added: “I was so delighted being a Nigerian watching the Team Nigeria performance at the African Games. It was a thing of joy, seeing that Nigerian sports is coming up again.
“We must give credit to the athletes. They really showed the spirit of Naija, that is the never die spirit, and this has given us great hope for Nigeria’s sports.
“It’s not about a single sport. Although we represent the football fraternity, we just need to come home and put things in order for all sports in Nigeria.
“Our under-20 women’s team went there and were thinking of the World Cup, but that does not explain leaving the gold for Ghana. With this, it has helped us to know that we still have a lot of work to do.
“For the entire Team Nigeria, with the number of gold medals we got and the athletes’ performances, it shows that our future is bright. I was happy seeing us coming back in some of the sports in which we have not been doing well.
“This is something that made me tell them congratulations. This shows that Nigerian sports is on the rise again.
“With this type of performance, and if we give the athletes what they need in terms of good preparations, I am sure Nigeria will reclaim its place as the Giant of Africa.”
