The National Sports Commission (NSC) has applauded the Nigerian men’s squash team for their remarkable performance at the 2024 Men’s World Team Squash Championship in Hong Kong.
The team has defied expectations, overcoming a rocky start to secure a spot in the tournament’s final.
After suffering two consecutive defeats in the opening stages, the Nigerian squad staged an incredible comeback, winning four straight matches.
This included a commanding 3-0 victory over host nation China and a gritty 2-1 win against Peru on Saturday.
Their triumphs have set up an exciting final showdown against Japan, scheduled for Sunday morning at 7:30 a.m. Nigerian time.
Reacting to the team’s performance, NSC Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade expressed his pride in the athletes.
“The news of our squash team’s performance in Hong Kong is heartwarming, and this is a very good sign that every sport can excel when given all the support,” he said.
Olopade also conveyed the excitement of the NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, who praised the team’s success as a testament to Nigeria’s potential across all sports.
“When I informed the Chairman about the feat of our squash team in Hong Kong, he was particularly happy and stressed the need to keep up the momentum under the new mandate to build the Nigerian sports ecosystem,” Olopade added.
The NSC pledged continued support for squash and other sports, with Olopade assuring the Nigeria Squash Federation of the Commission’s commitment to fostering excellence.
“And I want to assure the Nigeria Squash Federation that the National Sports Commission, under the Chairmanship of Mallam Shehu Dikko, will always give every sport all the needed support to excel,” he added.
The championship, organized by Hong Kong Squash and sanctioned by the World Squash Federation, saw 26 nations compete, with Nigeria and South Africa representing Africa.
Nigeria’s remarkable run has brought renewed hope for the country’s squash scene.
