With the 23-year-old currently in the United States for medical tests, the deal is expected to be finalized before the 29th of July, providing The Cottagers ample time to integrate Bassey into their first-team squad ahead of the upcoming Premier League campaign.
The decision to pursue Bassey came after careful consideration, with Fulham being torn between him and Mohammed Salisu. Ultimately, Silva’s preference for the Nigerian center-back prevailed, making Bassey the club’s top choice.
Bassey’s journey to the cusp of Premier League football began just three years ago when he signed his first professional contract with Rangers. Under the tutelage of Steven Gerrard, he developed rapidly and played a key role in the team’s unbeaten season.
His standout performances earned him a big-money move to Ajax in the Netherlands, where he made 25 appearances, notching up an impressive goal and gaining attention on British soil with remarkable displays in the Champions League, competing against giants like Liverpool and Napoli.
As Fulham looks to bolster their defensive line, Silva has prioritized the addition of a left-footed center-back, with vice-captain Tim Reem approaching the twilight of his career.
The team narrowly missed out on European football in the last Premier League season, making qualification for European competitions the next logical step for Silva’s ambitious side.
With Bassey’s potential and talents at their disposal, Fulham aims to build on their previous success and reclaim a spot in Europe after a 13-year absence.
