The Molade Okoya-Thomas Indoor Sports Hall at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, was electrified with fireworks and top-tier boxing displays as finalists clashed in the grand finale of the inaugural YUCATECO WBC/ABU Amateur Boxing Championship.

Fans were treated to an action-packed night featuring eleven thrilling bouts, with fighters showcasing remarkable skill and determination. Nigerian boxers stole the spotlight, claiming victory in most of the matchups.
Nigerian Fighters Reign Supreme
In the opening fight, Faruk Oshikoya (blue corner) secured a unanimous decision against Samuel Dahunsi, clinching the 52kg title. Quam Musefiu followed suit, earning a 4-1 victory over Mayowa Gbadeyan to become the 56kg champion.
The 60kg category saw a dominant performance from Rilwan Salawu, who overpowered Uganda’s Shakur Mugambe with a 5-0 victory. Meanwhile, Abdulramon Abdulwahab continued his impressive run in the 64kg division, edging out Abiodun Oluwaseun with a 4-1 win.
In the 69kg contest, Alabi Olamilekan secured a hard-fought 3-2 split decision over Battle Nuhu, while David Akintola earned a unanimous victory against Daniel Joshua in the 75kg bout. Saheed Jamiu emerged victorious in the 81kg fight after the referee stopped the match due to an injury suffered by Akoumany Clement of Togo.
Women’s Division Shines
In the female category, Pauline Assogba of Benin Republic defeated Uganda’s Brenda Maduwa in their 51kg clash. Kadirat Ajishola won a unanimous decision over Fathia Gafar in the 54kg class, while Aishat Gbadamosi and Precious Anine secured commanding victories against Fathai Suliamon and Anuoluwapo Akanni, respectively.
A Bright Future for African Boxing
Hon. Omonlei Yakubu Imadu, CEO of YUCATECO Boxing League and President of the Boxing Promoters Association of Nigeria, expressed satisfaction with the three-day event, calling it a promising sign for the future of African boxing.
Commending the fighters and officials, Imadu urged the young pugilists to stay focused on achieving greatness in their careers.
A key highlight of the tournament was the presentation of certificates to referees and ring officials who participated in a pre-event workshop, alongside medal ceremonies honoring the boxers.
The championship drew notable figures, including African Boxing Union President Houcine Houichi and top officials from Uganda, Togo, Ghana, Benin Republic, and Nigeria.
