Stanley Nwabali, the first-choice goalkeeper for the Super Eagles and Chippa United, has expressed confidence in Nigeria’s chances against South Africa in their upcoming World Cup qualifier.

Nwabali, who has been instrumental in the Super Eagles’ recent successes, believes that the team’s superior talent will give them an edge in the crucial match. The 27-year-old shot-stopper was a key figure in the AFCON 2023 tournament, where he kept four clean sheets in seven games, helping the three-time AFCON champions to a second-place finish in Ivory Coast.
Despite being a subject of potential exit from Chippa United, Nwabali has maintained his excellent form at the club level. He has replicated his AFCON performance, saving spot kicks and keeping 11 clean sheets from 26 league games in the DsTV Premiership.
In a recent interview with Lagos Talks on 91.3 FM, Stanley Nwabalispoke about the upcoming World Cup qualifier against the Bafana Bafana. “Football is the same everywhere but I don’t feel with the kind of players we have, we can have any challenge in any game especially in our group,” he said. He added that while he respects the South African team, he believes that if the Super Eagles can put themselves together, they can outmatch their opponents.
The match between Nigeria and South Africa is scheduled for next week Friday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, with kick-off time slated for 8pm. The Super Eagles will then face Benin Republic three days later.
