The Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF) is gearing up to host the second edition of the West Africa Scrabble Championship, scheduled to take place in Abuja in November.
Toke Aka, the President of the NSF, has revealed that the federation is collaborating closely with Scrabble Associations from Ghana, The Gambia, Liberia, and Sierra Leone to ensure a seamless championship.
The tournament is expected to feature 75 players hailing from five West African countries. Last year, Nigeria’s Eta Karo clinched victory in the individual category during the inaugural edition of the West Africa Scrabble Championship, with Team Nigeria also emerging as champions in the team event, hosted in Ghana.
Engineer Toke Aka pointed out that Abuja was chosen as the host city for the regional Scrabble competition due to its strategic location, excellent hotel facilities, strong government presence, and sporting culture.
He further disclosed that the NSF would require approximately 50 million Naira to organize the championship and that the members of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) would be announced early next month.
The West Africa Scrabble Championship (WASC) holds a significant place in the NSF‘s annual calendar of events. Notably, at the conclusion of the inaugural West Africa Scrabble Championship, nine Nigerians were among the top 10 players, showcasing the country’s dominance in the sport within the region.
As the preparations gain momentum, scrabble enthusiasts and players from across West Africa eagerly anticipate this second edition of the championship, which promises to be a thrilling showcase of linguistic dexterity and strategic wordplay.
