Nigeria will host the King’s Baton Relay (KBR) from June 15 to June 18, 2025, under the auspices of Commonwealth Sport and the Commonwealth Games, Nigeria.
The relay, leading up to the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, marks a historic first—each of the 74 participating Commonwealth nations and territories will receive its own baton to decorate, highlighting unique cultural identities.

Symbolising unity and friendly competition across the Commonwealth, the relay was renamed in 2022 as the King’s Baton Relay in honour of King Charles III, following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. His Majesty the King officially launched this reimagined edition at Buckingham Palace on March 10, 2025, Commonwealth Day.
The baton, which traditionally carries a message from the reigning monarch, arrived in Nigeria ahead of the scheduled celebration. The Nigeria Olympic Committee, in collaboration with the National Sports Commission, will oversee the baton’s decoration, reflecting the nation’s heritage and creative spirit.
Africa is the second region on the KBR route following its launch in the Caribbean on March 11, 2025. Beyond cultural celebration, this year’s relay carries an environmental mission. Commonwealth Sport and the Royal Commonwealth Society have partnered for the Commonwealth Clean Oceans Plastics Campaign, aiming to prevent one million pieces of plastic from entering Commonwealth waters. This campaign will accompany the baton throughout its journey.
The King’s Baton will be ceremoniously presented to His Majesty King Charles III during the Opening Ceremony of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on July 26, 2026.
