NTF Secretary General Sharmmah Makpa has expressed confidence in Nigeria’s ability to host a smooth and successful tournament.
Nigeria, as the host nation, will compete against Zimbabwe, Namibia, Ivory Coast, Benin Republic, and Ghana. This prestigious event, to be held at the Tennis Court of Package B in the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, will see the top three teams promoted to the Group II stage of the Davis Cup.
In an exclusive interview, Makpa detailed the meticulous arrangements being made to ensure the event’s success. “From the federation’s perspective, we are committed to making sure the venue is well-prepared, with all facilities in optimal condition and the necessary equipment in place,” she said.
Hosting the Group III event in Abuja is a first for Nigeria, and the NTF has been diligently planning from the outset to ensure everything proceeds without a hitch. “This is our first time hosting the Group III in Abuja. NTF has been preparing for this assignment from the very beginning up to this moment, and we will make sure everything runs according to schedule and goes as planned for a successful hosting of the competition,” Makpa added.
Makpa, who previously served as the Secretary General of the Cycling Federation of Nigeria, also expressed optimism about Nigeria’s performance in the championship. She noted that the national team, which includes top players like David Ekpenyong, Daniel Adeleye, Uche Oparaojie, Michael Emmanuel, and Christopher Bulus, has been in rigorous training. “Regarding the participation, Nigeria tennis players are in camp, training morning and evening. We are confident that, with God’s blessings, everything will go according to plan for a flawless and fruitful 2024 Davis Cup Africa Group III qualifying rounds.”
The upcoming tournament is not only an opportunity for Nigeria to showcase its organizational capabilities but also a chance to elevate its status in African tennis by advancing to the Group II stage. As the NTF works tirelessly to ensure a seamless event, all eyes will be on Abuja come July 2024.
