A team of six Nigerian lifters and two officials will depart the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, tonight at 10 PM en route to Moka, Mauritius, for the 2025 Africa Weightlifting Championship.

The contingent includes four female and two male lifters, ready to compete across six weight categories in the continent’s top weightlifting competition.
Representing Nigeria on the women’s side are Didih Onome Omolola (55kg), Lawal Rafiatu Folashade (59kg), Ayodele Ruth Imoleayo (64kg), and Matthew Sarah Ovayioza (76kg). On the men’s side, Tuesday Emmanuel (67kg) and Umoafia Edidiong Joseph (73kg) will fly the nation’s flag.
The championship is scheduled to run from April 20th to 28th in Moka. The Nigerian team is expected to arrive on Sunday, April 20, with the official opening ceremony set for Wednesday, April 23.
Africa Weightlifting Championship begins Thursday, with Omolola (55kg) and Folashade (59kg) taking the stage in the morning session. Later in the day, Emmanuel (67kg) and Joseph (73kg) will compete in the afternoon session starting at 2 PM Nigerian time. Nigeria’s campaign wraps up on Friday with Imoleayo (64kg) and Ovayioza (76kg) in action.
Team Nigeria heads to Mauritius buoyed by a stellar performance at the 2024 edition in Egypt, where they clinched a total of 11 medals—six gold and five silver.
The team will travel via Kenya Airways, with a stopover in Kenya before continuing to Mauritius.
