The Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF) has confirmed the venues for its Tournament Director Certification Courses in Nigeria, Sports247 reports.
NSF President, Engineer Toke Aka, disclosed this in a media briefing in Abuja on Wednesday. He emphasized that the certification course is a vital component of the Federation’s agenda to enhance the sport, which has brought honor and recognition to the country.

“The sport is growing rapidly across Nigeria, and there is an urgent need for high-quality organization of Scrabble events and tournaments. We must also support young and talented Tournament Directors to establish themselves quickly,” Aka stated.

As an Executive Member of the World English Scrabble Players Association (WESPA), Aka revealed that the certification courses will take place in three Nigerian cities: Abeokuta (Ogun State), Benin City (Edo State), and Uyo (Akwa Ibom State).
The first course is scheduled to hold in Uyo next month during the Niger Delta Sports Festival. The second course will take place in Benin City, coinciding with the NSF Festival, while the final course is set for May during the 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged Gateway Games, in Abeokuta.
“The NSF carefully selected these locations to minimize costs and logistical challenges for participants. Attendees from Abia, Ebonyi, Rivers, Cross River, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom will find the Uyo venue more convenient,” Aka explained.
Similarly, participants from Lagos, Kogi, Edo, Delta, Ondo, Anambra, and Ekiti will likely attend the Benin City course due to its proximity. The Abeokuta session will accommodate contingents from the North, South West, and any other states that missed the earlier exercises.
The courses will be supervised by NSF Technical Director John Curtis, former NSF Technical Director Umar Faruq Baba-Inna, National Coach Sir Prince Anthony Ikolo, and NSF President Engineer Toke Aka. The Federation’s Secretary, Victor Anusa, will provide administrative support.
Notably, all recently appointed National Zonal Youth Coordinators are expected to participate. The three-day course requires a participation fee of thirty thousand naira (N30,000).
“As these Scrabble coaches engage with schools and institutions, they must stay updated on the latest rules and regulations. The Federation remains committed to supporting them through programs like this to ensure the sport’s continued growth,” Aka concluded.
