The President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel, has congratulated Kirsty Coventry on her election as the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), marking a historic milestone for both Africa and the Olympic Movement.
“This is the moment for Africa to lead the biggest sporting movement in the world,” Engr. Gumel declared following the announcement of Coventry’s victory at the 144th IOC Session in Costa Navarino, Greece, the site of the ancient Olympics.
Coventry, 41, secured an overwhelming 49 of the 97 votes cast, winning on the first ballot to become the first woman and the first African to hold the prestigious position as the 10th President of the IOC.
