Commending the pivotal role played by NOC members, Gumel extended gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering support in fostering sports development throughout the year.
The NOC President urged all stakeholders, including federation presidents and the Ministry of Sports, to forge a unified front to propel Nigeria to new heights in the upcoming 2024 sporting calendar, featuring the Youth Winter Games, the African Games, and the highly anticipated Paris Olympic Games.
“We aspire for a resounding performance at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, aiming to surpass our achievements at the 1996 Atlanta Games where Nigeria clinched two gold medals.
Those Games witnessed memorable triumphs, including Chioma Ajunwa’s historic 7.12-meter-long jump for gold and the victorious campaign led by soccer maestro Nwankwo Kanu and the ‘Dream Team,'” Gumel declared.
Looking back at the sports landscape of 2022, Gumel underscored the committee’s commitment to fostering unity within the Olympic family and championing the principles of the Olympic Movement.
As the nation turns its gaze toward the challenges and triumphs of the upcoming sports calendar, the Nigeria Olympic Committee remains steadfast in its dedication to elevating Nigeria’s sporting prowess on the global stage.
The echoes of 2023’s success serve as a rallying cry for athletes, officials, and fans alike, as the nation sets its sights on achieving glory at the pinnacle of athletic competition in Paris.
