Nigeria Mourns As Olympic Trailblazer Nojim Maiyegun Passes Away At 85

Nigeria is mourning the loss of its first Olympic medallist, Nojim Maiyegun, who passed away on Monday at the age of 85. His death comes just days after the 60th anniversary of his historic achievement at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games, where he earned a bronze medal in boxing.

Competing in the Light Middleweight (71 kg) category, Maiyegun made history as the first Nigerian to reach the Olympic podium, sharing the bronze with Poland’s Józef Grzesiak.

The Honourable Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, expressed deep sorrow over Maiyegun’s passing, emphasizing the profound impact the late boxer had on Nigerian sports.
