Nigeria Launches Adopt-an-Athlete Training Grant Initiative, Ese Brume Named First Beneficiary

The National Sports Commission (NSC), led by Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko, has inaugurated the Adopt-an-Athlete Training Grant initiative, selecting Nigerian track and field champion Ese Brume as its first beneficiary.

This initiative follows Brume’s miraculous recovery from a severe car accident.

At the event marking the collaboration with Confetti Assets Limited, Dikko highlighted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of advancing sports in Nigeria through sustainable public-private partnerships (PPP).

“We must create a system that does not solely depend on government funding but rather leverages private sector partnerships to achieve a thriving sports economy,” he said.

Director General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, praised Brume’s resilience and focus. “Despite her accident, when I asked what we could do for her, she simply requested a training grant to purchase a vehicle and continue preparing for the World Championship next year,” Olopade revealed, lauding her dedication.

The innovative funding model seeks contributions from stakeholders, including contractors in the sports infrastructure sector. Confetti Assets Limited and Faisa emerged as the first donors, reflecting their commitment to Nigeria’s sports development.

Confetti Assets Limited Chairman, Mr. Benjamin Jonathan Ngoka, expressed his enthusiasm: “We are happy to key into this vision and pledge ongoing support for athletes and sports development in Nigeria.”

The initiative, set for a full rollout in February 2025, aims to provide elite and grassroots athletes with the resources they need to excel on the global stage.

Brume’s selection as the inaugural beneficiary underscores her legacy as one of Nigeria’s most decorated athletes and sets the tone for future beneficiaries.
