Nigeria Inaugurates E-Sports Federation To Boost Digital Sports Industry

In a landmark move for Nigeria’s sports industry, the National Sports Commission (NSC) on Friday inaugurated the board of the E-Sports Federation of Nigeria at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

During the ceremony, NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko emphasized that the newly formed federation aims to position Nigeria as a competitive force in global esports while engaging young Nigerians in the fast-growing digital sports sector.

Speaking to the media, NSC Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade underscored the transformative potential of esports in the country. He noted that esports has the power to “energize and encourage the youth to thrive in the digital space,” citing its estimated reach of 46 million individuals in Nigeria.

Olopade also acknowledged the challenges faced in establishing the federation, highlighting a six-year struggle to unify esports stakeholders. “This step forward will help Nigeria leverage an industry valued globally at almost $30 billion,” he stated. “I congratulate the NSC and all Nigerians—it’s the beginning of great things for the sports industry.”

Also present at the event was Dr. Olasupo Olusi, MD/CEO of the Bank of Industry, who assured that the banking sector would support the new federation in achieving its goals.

The newly inaugurated 13-member board is led by Yahaya Maikori as President and Pedro Damilola as Chief Operating Officer (COO). Other board members include:

With this development, Nigeria is set to embrace the esports revolution, creating opportunities for youth engagement, economic growth, and global competitiveness in the digital sports industry.
