National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko, alongside the Minister of Youth Development Ayodele Olawande, attended the event, which showcased the innovative robot designs developed by students.

This year’s theme, Submerged, challenged participants to explore the depths of the ocean and create solutions for the challenges faced by professionals in underwater environments.

The students’ designs reflected the unique conditions of ocean exploration, fostering problem-solving skills while deepening their understanding of marine science and technology.

During the event, demonstrations were held to showcase the sport’s potential, with the organizers highlighting the scoring systems, intellectual challenges, and career possibilities for contestants.

Dikko expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “I have been told that only one country has made this sport (robotics) an official sport. We will work with the organizers so that Nigeria could become the second country if all the parameters are right. This would engage our youths and contribute to creating the sports economy.”

Minister Olawande emphasized the importance of equipping youth with diverse skills. “I have always advocated that every youth should have more than one skill. With leaders like Mallam Shehu Dikko at the NSC, it’s easier to create opportunities for our youths. We will continue collaborating to take them off the streets and engage them meaningfully,” she said.

The competition, running from January 26 to 30, includes activities such as robot building, design, programming, computational thinking, project research, time management, and teamwork. A panel of industry professionals will judge the students based on the core values of the First Lego League and the First Tech Challenge programs.

The winning teams will have the opportunity to represent Nigeria in international competitions across America, Europe, Asia, and South America, continuing their journey of innovation and contributing to the global conversation on technological advancement.
