The Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF), under the leadership of President Uyi Akpata, has inaugurated a new cricket practice net at the playground of Community Secondary Commercial School Ibiaku Itam, situated along Calabar-Itu Road, Uyo.

This development is part of the NCF’s concerted efforts to nurture and discover more cricket talents in Akwa Ibom State.
Akpata, accompanied by representatives from the International Cricket Council (ICC) and Cricket South Africa, embarked on a visit to the region to inspect and commission the newly established cricket facilities.
This visit followed the successful two-day ICC men’s World Cup trophy tour that took place in Abuja and Lagos, in which the delegation from the ICC and Cricket South Africa participated.
During his visit, Akpata acknowledged the pivotal role played by cricket players from Akwa Ibom in elevating the sport at the grassroots level to the national stage. He commended the consistent contributions of these players, particularly the female cricket team members, who have significantly bolstered the national team’s ranks.
Akpata emphasized the importance of diversifying the reach of cricket in Nigeria and highlighted Akwa Ibom’s integral role in this endeavor. He noted that Akwa Ibom has consistently served as a crucial talent pipeline for the female national cricket team over the past decade. This sustained support from the region has resulted in the emergence of numerous cricket talents who have made their mark at the national level.

The construction of the cricket practice net was made possible through the sponsorship of the PET Foundation, which includes the NCF president’s wife as the chairman of the foundation board. This initiative reflects the commitment of various stakeholders to the development and growth of cricket in Nigeria.
The newly inaugurated practice net is poised to serve as a training hub for aspiring cricket players in Akwa Ibom State, providing them with state-of-the-art facilities to hone their skills and contribute to the continued success of Nigerian cricket on the international stage.
