The festival’s Torch Light, which toured the nine mandate states of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), arrived in Imo on March 27, 2025, and was received at the Dan Anyiam Stadium by the state’s Festival Ambassador, Mr. Emmanuel Amuneke, MFR.
The ceremonial handover to the Honourable Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Obinna Evaristus Onyeocha, and subsequently to the Executive Governor of Imo State, His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodinma, marked a key moment in the state’s preparations.
Following the ceremony, the torch has since left Imo, continuing its journey to the next participating state. Meanwhile, in Owerri, the focus remains on the athletes who successfully made it through the rigorous selection process.
The state trials, which concluded earlier this week, saw over 1,000 athletes competing at the Dan Anyiam Stadium for a place in the state’s contingent. After an intense selection process, 430 athletes were chosen and immediately moved into a closed camping session that began on March 29, 2025.
Members of the State Liaison Committee for the festival, led by Chairman and Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Obinna Evaristus Onyeocha, alongside Secretary Hon. Willie Okolieogwo, continue to oversee the camp to ensure the athletes receive the best preparation possible. With just days remaining before the festival’s kickoff on April 1, the Imo contingent is making final adjustments in readiness for departure.
As excitement builds, the athletes remain focused on representing Imo State with distinction at the NDSF in Uyo, where they will compete against top talents from across the Niger Delta region.
