“NFF Gave Me the Best Offer… Nigeria Wasn’t Fit For Me” – Hervé Renard Explains Decision to Decline Nigeria Super Eagles Job

Hervé Renard, a well-known French football coach, recently revealed the reasons behind his decision to turn down an offer to coach Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

Renard, who has a reputable track record including winning the Africa Cup of Nations twice, stated that while the offer from the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) was the best he had received, it ultimately didn’t align with his personal and professional plans.

Renard mentioned that he considered the offer for several weeks, carefully weighing the pros and cons. Despite the attractive terms, he decided it wasn’t the right fit for him at this stage of his career.

He says “I almost went to Nigeria. I weighed the pros and cons for several days, even weeks, before deciding to turn it down,” Renard said.

“It was the best offer I had received, but ultimately, it wasn’t the right fit for me.”

His decision has left the NFF with no option than to turn to Austine Eguavoen to continue coaching the super Eagles after serving as the interim manager for the rest of the AFCON 2025 qualifiers.
