This move comes after Waldrum’s commendable performance in leading the team to the Round of 16 at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, where the Super Falcons displayed an impressive run.
During the tournament, the Nigerian women’s team showcased their prowess by remaining unbeaten in regulation time in all four of their matches. Their impressive campaign was ultimately concluded with a penalty shootout defeat by England.
NFF President, Ibrahim Musa Gusau, emphasized the need for prompt negotiations due to the Super Falcons’ upcoming Women Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match next week.
“We have given the Technical Committee the go-ahead to hold talks with Randy Waldrum as we consider an extension of his current contract with the NFF.
They have to do this quickly as the team has a Women Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match next week,” Gusau stated. He acknowledged Waldrum’s accomplishments and recognized his role in guiding the team to a remarkable outing at the FIFA World Cup.
Randy Waldrum originally signed a two-year contract with the Super Falcons in 2021. During his tenure, he successfully led the team to qualify for the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco and secured their spot at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The Super Falcons’ performance at the World Cup, including a scoreless draw with Olympic champions Canada and a victory over co-hosts Australia, garnered attention and respect.
In the Round of 16, despite a competitive display, the Super Falcons’ match ended in a scoreless draw in regulation and extra time, ultimately leading to a penalty shootout in which they were narrowly defeated.
The NFF recognizes the progress made under Coach Waldrum’s guidance and is now looking into the possibility of extending his contract to ensure continuity and further growth of the women’s national team.
