Accolades are flying left, right and centre for the government of Lagos State, following their successful hosting of two finals in the 2024 President Federation Cup on Saturday.
The latest round of plaudits has come from a board member of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ganiyu Majekodunmi, who hailed the impact played by Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the football association’s chairman, Hajji Gafar Olawale Liameed in ensuring that both finals were hitch-free.
In the matches at Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan on Saturday, Rivers Angels of Port Harcourt won the women’s trophy with a 1-0 victory over Naija Ratels of FCT, while El-Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri beat Abia Warriors of Umuahia 2-0 in the men’s version.
In reaction to the outcome of both matches at Onikan Waterfront, Majekodunmi disclosed that he was excited with the smooth organisation, large turnout of spectators and top quality of play.
Majekodunmi, who is also the chairman of Ogun State Football Association (OSFA), added: “The beautiful game is gradually returning, and we will make sure we achieve it in full.
“I want to thank and laud the efforts of the Lagos State government for hosting a very successful President Federation Cup final. I came here with great expectations, and I cannot believe what I am seeing.
“I am happy to see Lagosians trooping out in their numbers for this final and then seeing the two teams doing their best on the field of play.
“The women’s final produced a true champion in Rivers Angels, who defeated Naija Ratels.
“The men’s final was also impressive. We saw El-Kanemi play good football against Abia Warriors.”
Majekodunmi then went on to hail Liameed for the success that the soccer buff has achieved as Lagos State Football Association (LSFA) chairman.
The NFF top shot ended his shower of accolades by acknowledging the role played by Governor Sanwo-Olu in the scheme of renewed mass interest that football is gaining all across Lagos State.
“I want to also mention that the Lagos State FA has done well under the leadership of Gafar Liameed. As part of his achievements, this is a wonderful hosting experience.
“The government of Lagos State has also done well, and Governor Sanwo-Olu has shown us how much love he has for football.
We are indeed very grateful,” Majekodunmi concluded.
