NFF Backs Eguavoen To Lead Super Eagles In AFCON 2025 Qualifiers

The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially endorsed Coach Augustine Eguavoen to continue as Head Coach of the Super Eagles for their upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches against Libya next month.

This decision follows the recommendation of the Federation’s Technical and Development Sub-Committee.

Eguavoen, 58, who has previously led the national team three times, is currently in temporary charge and has delivered a mixed set of results. Under his guidance, the three-time African champions secured a 3-0 victory over Benin Republic and played to a goalless draw against Rwanda in their first two qualifying matches earlier this month.

The NFF also confirmed that Eguavoen will retain his role as Technical Director and continue to work alongside his current coaching team, which includes Fidelis Ilechukwu, Daniel Ogunmodede, Olatunji Baruwa, and Tomaz Zorec. This same technical crew will also oversee the Super Eagles B team in their campaign to qualify for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

Additionally, the NFF Executive Committee approved Coach Justin Madugu as the interim head of the Super Falcons’ technical crew, following the departure of former coach Randy Waldrum. Madugu will lead the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s senior women’s national team, while the Federation searches for a permanent head coach.

The Super Falcons’ next major challenge will be the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations finals, set to take place in Morocco during the summer of 2025. This tournament will be a crucial test for Madugu and his team as they seek to continue the success of Nigeria’s most decorated women’s football team.

With Eguavoen leading the Super Eagles in their AFCON journey and Madugu stepping in for the Super Falcons, Nigerian football heads into an exciting period of transition and ambition on both fronts.
