The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has officially launched its 25th-anniversary logo and unveiled the mascot for the inaugural Niger Delta Sports Festival at a ceremony in Owerri, Imo State.
Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, congratulated the NDDC on its milestone and expressed gratitude for hosting the event in his state during his tenure. He emphasized his commitment to continued collaboration for the region’s development.
Speaking at the event, NDDC Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, highlighted the commission’s achievements and announced that the 25th-anniversary celebrations would feature various activities, including the highly anticipated Niger Delta Sports Festival, set to take place in Uyo, Akwa Ibom. He emphasized that the festival aims to foster regional unity and uncover emerging sporting talents.
Chairman of the unveiling ceremony’s planning committee, Alabo Boma Iyaye, echoed the importance of regional integration, while Co-chairman of the Niger Delta Sports Festival, Itiako Ikpokpo, detailed the level of preparedness for the competition, which is expected to welcome over 4,000 athletes and coaches from nine states.
Nine festival ambassadors were also introduced, much to the delight of attendees. The list includes Olympic gold medalists Victor Ikpeba and Emmanuel Amuneke, multiple African wrestling champion Blessing Oborodudu, and two-time African sprint champion Seun Ogunkoya.
Others named as ambassadors are former Super Falcons midfielder Efioanwan Ekpo, powerlifting icon Patience Igbiti, and former World Youth sprint champion Tamunosiki Atorubido. Nigerian football legend Kanu Nwankwo and Olympic relay gold medalist Enefiok Udo-Obong were also honored with ambassadorial roles for the sports festival.
